Bombed during World War II, St George’s Garrison Church survives as an evocative ruin with recently conserved mosaics, and a modern canopy roof, for all to enjoy.

Weddings at the Garrison Church

The Church is a unique and beautiful venue for a wedding for up to 150 guests (seated) or a maximum capacity of 200 guests.

The Church remains consecrated ground therefore it is not possible to hold a civil ceremony here. As a religious venue the Church falls outside the Diocesan framework which means that a full legal and religious marriage can only take place with an Archbishop’s Licence.

What some couples prefer to do is to have the legal formalities dealt with at Woolwich Town Hall and then have a Service of Blessing at the Church afterwards. That is effectively indistinguishable from a conventional Church wedding with the vows, and the public declaration that the couple are now “man and wife”.

One great advantage of the Garrison Church as a wedding venue is that the Service of Blessing and the reception can take place at the same place. Once the main gates are shut, guests can be fully at ease in the knowledge that the Church is fully secure, and there is no danger of children wandering toward the road.

We urge any couples thinking of hiring the Church for a wedding to come and visit the place and see for themselves what an extraordinary venue it is. We feel that the Church offers a beautiful location for such an important occasion, and that guests will long remember the day.

We welcome all different sizes and types of wedding.

St George's Garrison Church in Woolwich, with its modern canopy roof and stunning mosaics, is both an evocative ruin and a contemporary space. Designed by Thomas H Wyatt in an Italian-Romanesque style, the Church was built between 1862-63 to serve the Royal Artillery in Woolwich. Today it is run by a local group, the Woolwich Garrison Church Trust who are committed to making it available for all to visit and enjoy. Directly opposite the Barracks in Woolwich, South East London, come and enjoy its beauty and peaceful garden.
