Our Lady of Grace visit to the Garrison

Our Lady of Grace Primary School, Based locally in Charlton, learn about the history of the Garrison

We were delighted to welcome 2 classes of year 6 students from our Lady of Grace School Primary School in Charlton on successive days. Each group was some 25 strong with a number of teachers also in attendance, including on the Friday, the Head Teacher Mr Small.

The children were enthusiastic and well behaved. Tim’s history of the Church was interspersed with questions for the children, “What is the Victoria Cross”, “who knows where the 1936 Olympics were held” (one of of our VC winners, Jock Campbell captained the British equestrian team at those Games), “what is the military role of the RoyalArtillery”, “ who knows what happened on D Day” . One of the boys knew the names of all 5 of the D-Day landing beaches.

The history took about 45 minutes and a similar time was taken with the children being paired off and set a quiz requiring them to go all over the Church to find out the answers on various memorials. It was good to see them using surplus energy by racing around, and most of them had an impressive number of correct answers.

The final “formal” part of the event involved a visit in groups of 6 at a time to the crypt and the exploration of the dark passage at the back of the crypt illuminated only by the torch from a teacher’s mobile phone (no children were knowingly left in the crypt!).
