Armed Forces Day 2026
Armed Forces Day 2026 was a scaled down event this year, held on Saturday 27th June.
The major event on Barrack Field did not take place this year as the Army had decided to concentrate their celebrations for the South of England in Aldershot, which meant we would not have been able to access the necessary military hardware and personnel.
Instead, we decided to hold a scaled down event at the Garrison Church which took place on Saturday 27th June. The event opened with short speeches from the Chairman of the Trust (Tim Barnes) and the new Mayor of Greenwich (Cllr David Gardner).
After the speeches, there was a Parade consisting of a large group of local Army Cadets, and an Inspection by the CO Woolwich Station (Lt Col Verionica Sefton ) and the RSM Christopher Altringham. The cadets were immaculate and well drilled. It was good to have this feed back from the RSM after the event -
“The cadets, adult volunteers and staff all contributed greatly to the success of the event, and it was rewarding to see their enthusiasm and pride on parade.”
There were numerous stalls both inside the Church and outside, selling a variety of craft items.
In the afternoon, there was a performance from a local singer, Friday Child, and the RAF Cadets Band performed to their normal high standard. The entertainments were rounded off by a splendid performance by Company 3 who are regulars at the Garrison Church and never disappoint.
The sun shone throughout the day and the Church looked immaculate due to the labours of Steve and Michele our wonderful volunteers.
Tim Barnes,
Chairman WGCT
